چکیده

We present a freely available XSPEC model for the modulations seen in the long-term light curves of multiple ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). By incorporating the physics of multiple electron scatterings (ray traced with a Monte-Carlo routine), we go beyond analytical predictions and show that the geometrical beaming of radiation in the conical outflow can be more than a factor of 100 for opening angles smaller than 10◦. We apply our new model to the longterm, well sampled Swift light curve of the recently confirmed ULX pulsar NGC 5907 X-1 with an established period of 78 days. Our results suggest that geometrical beaming together with a slight precession of the conical wind can describe the light curve with a consistent set of parameters for the wind. The small opening angle of roughly 10−13◦ implies a highly super-critical flow and boosting factors at the order of B = 60–90 that would yield a fairly low surface magnetic field strength of 2× 10 Gauss.

Geometrical beaming of stellar mass ULXs

The presence or lack of eclipses in the X-ray light curves of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) can be directly linked to the accreting system geometry. In the case where the compact object is stellar mass and radiates isotropically, we should expect eclipses by a main-sequence to sub-giant secondary star on the recurrence time-scale of hours to days. X-ray light curves are now available for l...

Radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source.

The physical nature of ultraluminous x-ray sources is uncertain. Stellar-mass black holes with beamed radiation and intermediate black holes with isotropic radiation are two plausible explanations. We discovered radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 5408. The x-ray, radio, and optical fluxes as well as the x-ray spectral shape are consistent with be...

Chandra reveals a black - hole X - ray binary within the ultraluminous supernova remnant MF 16

We present evidence, based on Chandra ACIS-S observations of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946, that the extraodinary X-ray luminosity of the MF 16 supernova remnant actually arises in a black-hole X-ray binary. This conclusion is drawn from the point-like nature of the X-ray source, its X-ray spectrum closely resembling the spectrum of other ultraluminous X-ray sources thought to be black-hole...

The Nature of SS433 and the Ultraluminous X–ray Sources

The periodic precession (162–day) and nodding (6.3–day) motions of the jets in SS433 are driven in the outer regions of the disc, whereas the jets themselves, being relativistic, are launched near the black hole at the disc centre. Given that the nutation period is comparable to the dynamical timescale in the outer regions of the disc, it seems unlikely that these periods can be communicated ef...

First Detection of Mid-infrared Variability from an Ultraluminous X-Ray Source Holmberg II X-1

We present mid-infrared (IR) light curves of the Ultraluminous X-ray Source (ULX) Holmberg II X-1 from observations taken between 2014 January 13 and 2017 January 5 with the Spitzer Space Telescope at 3.6 and 4.5 μm in the Spitzer Infrared Intensive Transients Survey. The mid-IR light curves, which reveal the first detection of mid-IR variability from a ULX, is determined to arise primarily fro...
